Tenable Comment for System Administrator Appreciation Day

System Administrator Appreciation Day on 25 July 2025 is a timely reminder of the critical and often invisible role sysadmins play in keeping the digital world running smoothly. While their work might not always make headlines, it forms the basis for every aspect of modern business operations, from system uptime and network stability to data security and compliance.

Today’s system administrators wear many hats. They are troubleshooters, architects, incident responders, and in many ways, the first line of defence in an organisation’s cybersecurity strategy. They are the ones rolling out emergency patches at short notice, fixing misconfigurations before they become entry points for attackers, and ensuring systems stay resilient under growing pressure from both users and threats.

Tenable’s Cloud Security Risk Report 2025 revealed that 9% of publicly accessible cloud storage contains sensitive data, and over half of AWS ECS task definitions have secrets embedded, such as access tokens or encryption keys. These are not abstract risks but operational realities that system administrators face every day. The findings also highlight the presence of toxic cloud “trilogies” – workloads that are vulnerable and overly privileged present in nearly a third of organisations.

It is sysadmins who are tasked with identifying and dismantling these time bombs before data is exploited.

We often discuss cyber threats in terms of trends and technology, but it is people, especially system administrators, who bring those defences to life. They go beyond keeping the lights on; they keep the organisation safe.

So today, let’s recognise their work not just with thanks, but with continued investment in their growth and a seat at the table when it comes to cybersecurity decisions. Because without them, none of it works.”
