Closing the governance gap requires structured action.
- Baseline and build a use-case inventory. Conduct an organisation-wide audit to map where AI is in use, who is using it, and what decisions or operations it supports.
- Apply proportionate controls. Use the nine pillars to match governance measures to risk. High-impact systems require more stringent oversight, while lower-risk tools can be managed more flexibly.
- Embed and iterate. Governance is a living process that must adapt to evolving technologies, regulations, and threats. Review policies regularly and refine them based on lessons learned.

AI governance directly influences adoption. When users trust that AI systems are transparent, fair, and secure, they are more likely to use them effectively. Boards will expect assurance that AI is deployed responsibly. Without strong governance, problems can remain hidden until significant damage occurs.
