There’s this question that keeps coming up in cybersecurity circles, and honestly, it feels a bit like asking whether we can outrun our own shadow. Can defensive AI actually stay ahead of AI-powered attacks? The short answer is probably not in any permanent way, but that doesn’t mean we’re doomed to lose this fight.

The thing about AI in cybersecurity: it’s fundamentally playing both offense and defense at the same time. The same capabilities that make AI brilliant at detecting anomalies and predicting threats also make it exceptional at finding vulnerabilities and automating attacks. We’re in an arms race with ourselves, which is strange when you think about it.

Defenders do have some advantages. Organizations implementing AI-driven security can process threat intelligence at scales humans never could. We’re talking millions of events per second, identifying patterns that would take security teams months to spot manually. That’s genuinely useful. But attackers have access to those same tools, usually with fewer constraints and definitely less concern about collateral damage.

What really gets me is the asymmetry. Defenders need to be right every single time. Attackers only need to be right once. Add AI into that equation, and you’re giving attackers the ability to probe defenses continuously, learn from failures, adapt strategies in near real-time. Traditional security assumed a certain level of human limitation on the attacking side. You could only try so many things so quickly. AI removes that ceiling.

Faster and Faster

We’re already seeing it with AI-generated phishing campaigns that adapt based on recipient responses, or malware that modifies its own code to evade detection systems. The sophistication gap between what a determined attacker can do with AI versus what most organizations can defend against seems to be growing.

Levels to The Game

Maybe we’re asking the wrong question, though. Instead of “can defensive AI outpace offensive AI,” perhaps we should be asking “how do we build systems that assume sophisticated AI-powered attacks are inevitable?” That’s a different problem entirely.

This means moving beyond the detection-and-response paradigm that’s dominated cybersecurity for decades. We need architectures that assume compromise will happen, that compartmentalize damage, that can maintain critical functions even when parts of the system are under active attack. AI can help with that kind of adaptive resilience, but it requires rethinking the whole approach rather than just trying to be faster or smarter than the attackers.

Not all AI in cybersecurity is created equal, either. The quality of your defensive AI depends entirely on the data it’s trained on, the scenarios it’s tested against, how well it’s integrated into your broader security ecosystem. Most organizations are implementing AI security tools without really understanding their limitations or failure modes. That’s a recipe for false confidence, which might actually be worse than no AI at all.

The regulatory landscape is starting to catch up. As frameworks like the EU AI Act and various NIST guidelines mature, organizations will need to demonstrate not just that they’re using AI for security, but that they understand and can manage the risks those AI systems themselves introduce. Your defensive AI can be manipulated, poisoned, or turned into an attack vector if you’re not careful about it.

So can AI outpace AI-powered attacks? In bursts, maybe. Sustained over time? I doubt it. What it can do is change the game. Make attacks more expensive, more complex, hopefully more detectable before they cause catastrophic damage. But anyone selling you a solution that claims AI will “solve” cybersecurity is selling fiction. What we’re really talking about is buying time and raising costs for attackers, which in this business might be the best we can realistically hope for.
