Mobile Danger Zone: AI-Powered Attacks and Human Error Create “Perfect Storm” for Organisations

Australia – SYDNEY – OCTOBER 23, 2025 – Verizon Business Australia today announced its contribution to the Verizon 2025 Mobile Security Index (MSI). The report reveals that mobile devices are under greater attack than ever, with 85% of organisations reporting an increase in mobile-related attacks.

This year’s report, now in its 8th year, shows a “perfect storm” is brewing, created by the dual forces of escalating artificial intelligence (AI)-powered attacks and persistent human error. The findings show that while 93% of organisations report employees using generative AI (genAI) on mobile devices, 64% cite data compromise from employees inputting sensitive information into these platforms as their top mobile risk.

“The findings in this year’s Mobile Security Index mirror the challenges we see every day. The rise of AI-driven threats requires a more proactive and intelligent approach to security, which is why we are committed to helping our clients navigate this complex landscape,” said Mark Trumble, Head of Cybersecurity GTM, Asia Pacific, Verizon.

The intersection of human error, AI-powered threats, and mobile devices has become the new epicentre of organizational risk. According to the MSI, in 80% of smishing simulations, up to half of the employees clicked on a malicious link. This continues a persistent trend, with the 2025 Data Breach Investigations Report noting the human element is present in 60% of confirmed breaches.

“This year’s Mobile Security Index is a clear wake up call. Mobile security is no longer a perimeter defense, but a battle fought in the palm of every employee’s hand,” said Chris Novak, VP of Global Cybersecurity Solution, Verizon Business. “The rapid adoption of genAI is a gamechanger, and businesses of all sizes must rethink security measures aimed at AI-assisted attacks and support employees in leveraging technology securely”.

Key Findings of the 2025 Mobile Security Index

The 2025 MSI is based on a comprehensive survey of over 760 security professionals and draws on data from industry-leading partners. The report helps cybersecurity leaders make informed decisions for businesses of all sizes.

Key findings include:

  • Fallout is more severe: 63% of organisations that suffered a cyber incident reported major repercussions like downtime, which is a 16% increase from the previous year.
  • SMBs feel vulnerable: 57% of small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) agree that they are at a disadvantage in terms of resources, making it harder to respond to cybersecurity attacks than larger enterprises. They also lag behind larger companies in providing comprehensive AI risk training (39% vs. 50%).
  • AI governance gaps persist: Despite the widespread use of genAI, only half of organisations have defined and enforced genAI usage policies.

As mobile and IoT threats rise, the need for robust security measures has never been greater. The report underscores that true resilience comes from unified visibility and securing the network itself.
