GitHub Brings Data Residency To Australia With GitHub Enterprise Cloud

GitHub, the most widely adopted Copilot-powered developer platform, now offers organisations in Australia more control over where their code is stored

GitHub announced today that GitHub Enterprise Cloud with data residency is now available in Australia. This showcases GitHub’s commitment to fostering innovation and growth in the region, anchored in the cloud and powered by AI, while empowering enterprises with greater transparency, control, and security.

As enterprises increasingly turn to the cloud to accelerate innovation and improve operational efficiency, the benefits of cloud-based DevOps become more evident. According to IDC’s WorldWide Developer and DevOps 2025 Predictions, 70% of developers will leverage cloud-native developer portals and cloud developer environments to improve the efficiency of their work by 2027. However, many organisations in highly regulated sectors in Australia have not been able to capitalise on cloud-based DevOps due to their need for greater flexibility and control over their data, often limiting them to costly and complex self-hosted solutions.

“Data residency is a vital strand to the DNA of digital transformation – creating a localised pathway for organisations in highly regulated industries to store their code in region and move to the cloud. Starting now, GitHub offers the ability for all organisations to store their code in Australia,” said GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke. “From the public sector to manufacturing, healthcare, finance, telecommunications and beyond, with data residency we will ignite a new wave of digital transformation at scale in the great nation of Australia.”

GitHub Enterprise Cloud with data residency delivers an enterprise-grade development platform that removes the complexities of self-hosted infrastructure with a reliable cloud-based solution, all while empowering customers with greater control over their code to help deliver more impactful business outcomes. Powered by Microsoft Azure’s infrastructure and security, customers can scale effortlessly and develop more securely with confidence to meet growing business demands.

“Enterprises with a global presence often face challenges in managing and storing their code and data to meet regional standards and their own governance and compliance requirements,” said Jim Mercer, IDC Program Vice President of Software Development DevOps and DevSecOps. “With data residency on GitHub Enterprise Cloud, organisations control where their code is stored, addressing regional and business compliance challenges while providing access to the familiar GitHub Enterprise functionality, including add-on capabilities, such as GitHub Copilot and GitHub Advanced Security.”

Australia is the first market in Asia Pacific and the second globally to receive this new deployment option. Data residency on GitHub Enterprise Cloud is also available in the European Union.

“Data sovereignty is a critical issue facing enterprises around the world as meeting compliance requirements becomes increasingly challenging. Giving customers geographical options for repository storage, leveraging parent company Microsoft’s worldwide Azure data centres, will ensure enterprises can tackle those requirements effectively,” said Rob Sanfilippo, Directions on Microsoft.
