Genetec Partners With Western Sydney University to Empower and Inspire the Technology Workforce of Tomorrow

SYDNEY, May 1, 2025Genetec Inc. (“Genetec”), the global leader in enterprise physical security software, has signed a five-year agreement with Western Sydney University, to offer full-time students semester-long internships, providing them with practical skills in a fast-growing industry.

As part of the program, students will gain valuable hands-on experience at the Genetec Sydney Experience Centre, located in Sydney’s Tech Central Hub. Interns will have the opportunity to work across different company departments, including Marketing, Channel Sales, Sales, Sales Engineering and Technology Support. To support their development, interns will be paired with experienced mentors to provide them with guidance and personalized development throughout the program.

“By providing meaningful opportunities, robust training, and a strong sense of community, we aim to empower the next generation of talent to reach their full potential,” said George Moawad, Country Manager for Oceania at Genetec. “We’re excited to collaborate with Western Sydney University to play a role in developing and boosting Australia’s digital skills capability. Real-world immersion will give the students the opportunity to develop the ‘skills’ necessary to succeed in the workplace.”

The Australian Computer Society’s 2024 Digital Pulse Report forecast that the country is unlikely to meet industry’s need for 1.3 million tech workers by 2030. Indeed, enrolments in IT courses are declining. At the time of the report launch last October, ACS President Helen McHugh emphasised that “The tenth edition of the Digital Pulse serves as a wake-up call for the challenges we must address head-on.

Western Sydney University recognises the importance of industry partnerships in preparing students for the evolving job market. “Western Sydney University‘s educational approach and course structure aligns with contemporary industry needs and are designed to develop entrepreneurial leaders and innovative thinkers who are equipped to succeed,” said Hind Benbya, Dean of the School of Business, Western Sydney University. “Collaboration between the government, with private sector companies such as Genetec, and educators is essential to up-skill today’s workforce for the jobs of tomorrow. We look forward to working with Genetec to empower Australian students with workplace skills to succeed in the digital economy.”

In 2024, Genetec welcomed nearly 400 interns to its offices around the world providing an immersive experience mirroring the life of a full-time employee and preparing students for future success. This initiative reflects the company’s commitment to nurturing future talent and addressing critical workforce gaps in the technology sector.

The Genetec Western Sydney University internship program will run two intakes a year – in March and July – with the first group starting in early March 2025. Interested students can contact their Western Sydney University course advisor.
