Globally-Distributed-Company/LONDON, UK (July 20, 2022) โย SoftIron, the leader in purpose-built and performance-optimised data centre solutions, today announced that it has joined theย Sustainable Digital Infrastructure Alliance (SDIA).
The SDIA is a platform that creates tangible benefits for its members, created as an authoritative source of industry leaders and information, accelerating a path forward for the digital sector to reduce its environmental impact to as close to zero as possible.
The SDIA is a non-profit network of more than 100 organisations working to catalyse the transition to a sustainable digital infrastructure.
Established in 2019, the Alliance aligns all actors in the digital sector โ from energy supply and data centres, to fibre-optic networks and software โ on a mission to build a sustainable digital economy and realise itsย Roadmap to Sustainable Digital Infrastructure by 2030.
The digital ecosystem is incredibly complex and to reduce its environmental impact, the SDIA community facilitates collaboration across the entire value chain to promote a sustainable digital economy โ from an environmental, economic, and social perspective.
โSoftIron was founded recognising that the status quo for data centre hardware was unsustainable and fundamentally broken for the needs of the future – impacting everything from energy draw to supply chain obscurity and dependencies, and virtually every manner of waste,โ said Phil Straw, CEO and Co-founder of SoftIron.
โSoftIron was created to help lead the industry in the right direction, starting at the core of the problem and working outward. To that end, SoftIron has completely reinvented and modernised how data infrastructure is designed, manufactured and delivered in virtually every regard. Taking the approach that โhardware matters,โ SoftIron has developed highly integrated data infrastructure solutions that optimise every aspect of the hardware and software architecture delivering significant carbon footprint reductions for customers using our solutions. We are proud to share the vision of the SDIA and look forward to helping lead the industry toward better collaboration and more sustainable solutions for a greener future,โ added Mr Straw.
โWith their fresh approach to hardware design and manufacturing for data infrastructure, we are excited about the potential of bringing in SoftIronโs unique expertise and experience to our organisation,โ said Daan Terpstra, Executive Chairman, SDIA.
โAs a nascent company looking to bring disruption to the market with innovative hardware solutions that reduce energy consumption, heat, and space needed, SoftIron brings a unique perspective to our working groups. Together we will collaborate to develop new concepts and ideas that set new industry standards and make climate-neutral data centres and digital infrastructure a reality,โ added Mr Terpstra.
Reducing Carbon Footprints
Recently, SoftIron investor, Earth Capital Ltd affirmed SoftIronโs status as a global leader in energy-efficient data infrastructure solutions for core-to-edge data centres.
In a report titled, โSoftIron Carbon Footprint Report 2022,โ Earth Capital demonstrated how SoftIron is helping its customers reduce their carbon footprints through the use of its highly integrated HyperDrive storage platform that dramatically reduces space and energy footprint, highlighting that the energy usage of the platform โis up to five times smaller than that of equivalent appliances on the market.โ
The report states that for every 10 PB of data storage shipped by SoftIron, an estimated 292 tonnes of CO2e is saved by reduced energy consumption alone[1]. (Stated differently, for every 34 TB of HyperDrive installed, one tonne of CO2e is saved from being released into the environment.) This is the equivalent of 722,322 miles driven by an average gasoline-powered passenger vehicle in carbon reduction (relative to 32,744 gallons of gasoline consumed).[2]
The report also calls attention to the reductions in heat that SoftIronโs appliances are able to achieve through their reduced energy consumption, noting that โSoftIron appliances produce up to 80% less heat than the standard, thereby radically reducing emissions pertaining to cooling of data centres.โ

About SoftIronยฎย –ย SoftIron makes the products that underpin the next evolution of IT infrastructure.
Our blueprint is radical. Taking full control over design and manufacture of platforms optimised for selected open source software, our highly integrated products reduce space and energy footprints while delivering extraordinary performance. Challenging traditional IT manufacturing and organisational strategy, weโve developed a model that enables us to create a more resilient and connected business for the customers we serve. A commitment to openness, transparency, and simplicity helps address emerging multi-faceted threats while eliminating the vendor โlock-inโ so common elsewhere. IT leaders mindful of the pain of proprietary technologies, increasing cloud and energy costs and growing skills gaps understand that solving these challenges needs a holistic approach that only an integrated technology company can achieve.

[1]ย This is assuming industry-standard data storage appliances use 4.08 GWh per PB and are averaged from: Supermicro, 2022; DELL EMC, 2019 & HPE, 2018. SoftIron data storage uses 1.2 GWh per PB (Huntridge, 2020). The calculation uses the UK electricity carbon conversion factor. This figure has been updated from the SoftIron Carbon Footprint Report issued in a May press release. SoftIron discovered the error and brought it to Earth Capital for correction.
