Backing Local, Securing National: Minister Opens New Cube Cyber Cybersecurity Operations Centre in Queensland

Brisbane, 5 September 2025 – In a significant step forward for sovereign cyber defence, The Hon. Steven Minnikin MP, Minister for Customer Services and Open Data and Minister for Small and Family Business, has officially opened Queensland headquartered Cube Cyber’s new Security Operations Centre (SOC) in Brisbane.

The Cube Cyber centre represents a strategic move to strengthen Australia’s incident response capabilities and reduce reliance on offshore cybersecurity providers supporting real-time protection for the local businesses that underpin the national economy.

“As digital threats escalate, we need homegrown solutions that match that urgency,” said The Hon, Steven Minnikin. Security infrastructure like this helps build the resilience of small and mid-sized enterprises and contributes to our broader goal of ensuring Australian’s can operate safely and confidently in a digital-first environment.”

The Cube Cyber Brisbane-based SOC provides 24/7 coverage and is powered by leading vendors including SentinelOne, Netskope and Illumio which provide industry leading Managed Detection and Response (MDR), incident triage, escalation, and coordinated action, all powered by a local team of experienced analysts and engineers. It reinforces the company’s approach to providing enterprises with a reinforced cyber security posture by focusing on converting “checklist” response plans into real operational capability, through expert-led assessments and co-managed support.

“We didn’t build this SOC to tick a compliance box,” said Andrew O’Shea Co-Founder of Cube Cyber.  “We built it to help businesses and public sector agencies respond with clarity, speed and control when it counts. This centre gives Australian organisations direct access to a local team that can detect threats early, escalate issues fast, and help them build a response plan that actually performs under pressure.”

In FY 2023-2024, more than 36,700 calls were made to the Australian Signals Directorate Cybersecurity Hotline, an increase of 12 per cent from the previous financial year with email compromise, online banking fraud and business email compromise fraud the top three self-reported cybercrimes (1).

Cube Cyber was established in 2015 and is a trusted Australian cyber security partner, delivering enterprise-grade security with a hands-on advisory approach to protection.

Since 2020, Cube Cyber has grown from a specialist in security solution design and delivery into a full-service cybersecurity partner serving customers across Australia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, and the UK.

The company’s managed portfolio now spans Managed Detection & Response (MDR), Hybrid SOC, Microsoft Security, Cloud Security, Vulnerability Management, and Cybersecurity Awareness training, with customers across finance, healthcare, government, energy, and retail. Alongside its SOC operations, Cube Cyber has developed a strong Professional Services business, delivering consulting engagements for leading government and enterprise organisations.

Cube Cyber has also been an early adopter of artificial intelligence to detect threats and secure customer environments, also having recently launched a dedicated AI Security practice to help organisations navigate the risks of the new landscape.

In 2024 Cube Cyber was appointed as a SentinelOne Incident Response Partner, one of only a handful across APAC and became the first Illumio Certified Services Partner in the region recognised for having the highest number of certified staff and proven success in customer implementations.

The SOC launch coincides with the launch of Cube Cyber’s “From Risk to Readiness” campaign, which provides business and IT leaders with tools to assess and strengthen their incident response capability, including readiness scorecards, tactical playbooks, and expert-led assessments.

As most security incidents break down during escalation or decision-making, Cube Cyber’s model helps teams close the gap between planning and action, without adding unnecessary complexity.

“It’s not about buying more tools,” O’Shea added. “It’s about building confidence in your response. That’s what our local SOC enables – real experts, real guidance, real protection.”
