Why do you enjoy working in the cyber security field?
There is always something to learn! Since I took my first steps in Security before the word cyber was even a thing, technology has sky rocketed. Laptops and even mobile phones were not all that common in the mid 90’s, and the seemingly mythical idea of a security incident made it really difficult to for anyone to take the risk and benefits of ‘IT Security’ seriously. As the world became more connected the risk continued to grow and evolve, as did the need to educate people on how to protect and manage information. The cost of security incidents eventually began to emerge, but Security was still seen as an ‘IT’ problem with a technical solution. Now, with the introduction of privacy and other data related laws around the world, and the wonders of what we can do with data, ensuring people understand how to protect their own and company data, as well as knowing their rights and freedoms around it is nearer the centre of cyber security and data protection health. Introducing people to the topic and finding new ways to keep people engaged on protecting and managing data safely as working practices, our lives, and the context of how we interact with data continues to change is never dull!
What are your words of advice to encourage other women to work in the space?
There is still so much opportunity in Cyber whether your interest is technology, leadership, communication or all 3! There are also plenty of brilliant and experienced people who are really passionate about bringing on empowering, and enabling new people and ideas into the industry so you’ll never be bored. You don’t necessarily need to be a mathematician or an IT wizard (I am neither) as (in every industry), a balance of skills is vital to ensure cyber security and data privacy is as effective as it can be.
