Name: Holly Baker
Title: Threat Intelligence Analyst
Why do you enjoy working in the cyber security field?
I’ve tried a variety of career paths from music, to education. The cyber security field has easily been the most welcoming and friendly environment for me. The opportunities that come out of being in a field like this are constantly evolving, and I was fortunate enough to see a variety of different departments, from Governance Risk and Compliance, to our Tesserent Security Operations Centre.
My position in our SOC focuses heavily on threat intelligence, and vulnerability management, which have provided huge opportunities to not only to learn more myself, but educate others. Between keeping our colleagues and clients up to date with our YouTube threat intelligence briefings, enriching our SIEM alerting, and developing vulnerability management solutions for our clients, the opportunities in this field are endless. If you’re a knowledge seeker and you love a challenge, I would recommend diving into the cyber security field.
What are your words of advice to encourage other women to work in the space?
I can wholeheartedly say that each person I’ve run into along my cyber security journey has always provided advice and words of encouragement. From the outside its easy to assume that the cyber security field is quite daunting. IT in general has often maintained a male dominated stereotype, however in the cyber security space I’ve always felt encouraged and supported by my peers. There are also some great resource, such as Women in CyberSecurity (WiCyS), who offer recruitment opportunities, support, and training initiatives which are a great place to start for women considering moving into the industry. I’d definitely encourage women to venture in the world of cyber.
