Name: Germaine Tan
Title: VP of Cyber Risk Management
Why do you enjoy working in the cyber security field?
I love that the industry is so dynamic – both the subject matter and the people in the industry. Whether we are talking about the threat landscape, identifying a vulnerability, or a launching the latest technology or security strategy, the industry is always discussing the impact of the next big thing.
However, it is also very challenging to deliver a cyber security strategy that is flexible, well executed, and 100% protective. For example, a CISO can have a fully considered security strategy, and plans to roll it out in two years, but by then the threat landscape can look very different, or the business operations can change such that the strategy is not relevant anymore. The “in theory” compared to the reality is always so different. I thrive on a challenge that involves policy, structure, strategy, technology and people, and the field of cyber security is perfect for these passions.
What are your words of advice to encourage other women to work in the space?
Continue to challenge yourself and be curious. Curiosity is how I push myself to learn new things, have better conversations, and make new relationships. I’ve had the honour of working with many talented and driven women from all over the world. Some of them inspire me, some of them come to me for advice, some of them I look up to in awe, and most of them I’m lucky enough to be able to call a friend. Act according to your values, and you will find your crowd and flourish.
If you are in doubt or need a listening ear, just ask. I have learnt so much from my colleagues in the industry, from both women and men, and I strive to be there for others the same way they were for me.
I firmly believe that if we focus on the process and growth, the results will come. Stay true to your values, if they are the right ones, the right people will remember you.
